Mercury News has reported that authorities in San Diego had to temporarily shut down part of California highways 805 and 94 after leaky grease truck created a mile-and-a-half long oil slick on the road. The slick caused at least two motorists to lose control of their car and spin out, and caused two others to collide as well. Cleanup crews used sand to absorb the grease.

Newsday.com reported that a traffic signal in Elmont, NY fell from the cable holding it up, striking a motorist below. There was no explanation as to why the traffic signal would have fallen.

Since he was already being charged with vehicular homicide, stemming from an alcohol related accident that happened prior to the discovery of his immense cache of signs, it’s unlikely he is too worried about a misdemeanor charge of possession of stolen property.

New York state police say that they’re not crying – or issuing tickets – over a tractor-trailer crash that spilled more than 1,000 gallons of milk onto a highway ramp. Milk and diesel fuel spilled onto the road and into the Mahwah River in Hillburn when the tanker overturned Sunday afternoon on a state thruway ramp heading toward Interstate 87. The driver suffered a minor concussion and was treated at a hospital. Crews trained to handle hazardous materials cleaned up the spill, and the ramp was closed for about eight hours.

While driving without shoes on does not seem to be codified (lawyer talk for illegal), should driving without shoes cause one to drive unsafely or if the same interferes with one’s driving, (it) still could be grounds for the issuance of a citation.”

North Huntingdon police Sgt. Duane Kucera concedes he took a “little egg on the face” when he erected 19 mph signs on two township streets a year ago and inadvertently violated state and federal regulations requiring speed limits in 5 mph increments. Even though the 20 mph signs are back up on Mockingbird Lane in front of Norwin Intermediate School and on Biddle Avenue In Westmoreland City, Kucera thinks motorists got the message to slow down. He’s had no speeding complaints in more than a year.

Knoxville police have lost red-light cameras to traffic accidents but never to gun play. “This is the first one that’s been shot,” Capt. Gordon Catlett said of the wounded camera at the intersection of Broadway Avenue and Interstate 640 — one of 15 camera-equipped intersections in the city. Clifford E. Clark, 47, was charged with felony vandalism and reckless endangerment for allegedly firing at least three rounds from a .30-06 hunting rifle at the camera, knocking it out of action.

A waste truck leaked poultry fat along 30 kilometres of Virginia roadway today, causing at least four crashes not to mention a stinky mess. State police say a valve was left open on truck hauling waste grease from the Perdue Farms rending plant in Accomac. The mistake wasn’t noticed until the truck reached a weigh station at the Maryland state line. At least four crashes and several spinouts were reported on northbound U.S. Route 13. One injured person was taken to hospital.

Safety conscious schoolchildren handed-out their own ‘speeding tickets’ to motorists in an attempt to improve road safety. “Although some people do take it steady near the school, some people like to speed along. I hope my ticket will make a difference to this as it shows what will happen if you speed,” one student said.
